La Gourmet Box invites you to celebrate the arrival of spring by taking a jaunt to the département of Jura. With its generous earth and wide open spaces, this region has something to tempt every palette. The combination of naturally rich soils and premium products with the ancient savoir-faire of local artisans yields truly delectable results. Some of the most select products of this corner of eastern France, formerly part of the Free County of Burgundy or Franche-Comté, include Arbois and other local AOC wines, mountain cheeses like the famous Comté variety, wild berries and plants, crayfish... an astonishing array of gourmet delicacies to delight even the most discriminating epicures.

Winery: Fruitière Vinicole d'Arbois – Château Béthanie.
Vineyards produce very different wines depending on the characteristics of the soil in which they grow, and Chardonnay grapes have found a perfect place to sink their roots in Jura, where the earth offers a unique blend of elegance and mineral freshness. This Arbois Chardonnay has a clear, bright colour with pale gold highlights. The first thing your nose will detect is the fragrance of honey, fruit and white flowers. In the mouth it's bold and round, evolving towards a perfect balance of mineral and fruity flavours. Unbeatable! Pairing recommendations: serve with fish, shellfish, blue cheese or as an aperitif with seafood hors d’oeuvres. Serve chilled between 9 and 11ºC.
Artisan : Fumé du Jura.
Since the firm was founded over four decades ago, the artisans at Le Fumé du Jura have carried on a family culinary tradition, using all-natural ingredients in their time-honoured recipes. They process fully traceable, locally raised meats at their own on-site laboratory. The terrine we've selected for this box is incredibly tender and savoury thanks to a fine blend of pork meat and liver with wild mushrooms that grow nearby. And for a special gourmet touch, they add the full-bodied aromatic complexity of Savagnin, Jura's most iconic grape variety. The perfect appetizer with a glass of Chardonnay.
Artisan : Le Moulin de Vaux.
The culinary artists at Le Moulin de Vaux use fresh local products to prepare superb artisanal dishes. This particular recipe combines two of Jura's signature products, guinea fowl and crayfish. The tender flesh of the guinea fowl is enhanced by the flavour of crayfish tails and a dash of cognac, creating a heavenly blend of premium products that's sure to delight even the most discerning palettes.
This dish is usually served with aromatic white rice.
Artisan : Au Comtois Courtois.
Au Comtois Courtois is an artisanal family business in the village of Montrond near the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park, where wild berries grow in abundance. Véronique, the owner, prepares jams and coulis (a sweet sauce rather like liquid jam) with the help of a few local grandmothers who share advice and their old-fashioned secret recipes. The coulis are made by hand in her own laboratory from puréed fruit with a tiny amount of sugar and honey and no artificial colourings or preservatives to mask the natural flavour of her wild forest berries. It makes an exquisitely tasty, colourful topping for ice cream, yoghurt or chocolate cake.
Artisan : Confiserie Klaus.
Maison Klaus has existed in Jura for more than a century, and over the years the quality of its products have made it a veritable institution whose fame has spread far beyond the province’s borders. The caramels they make are cooked in old-fashioned copper pots, and their chocolates go through a lengthy refining process to obtain the best flavour and texture. We chose this product because it combines the two house specialities: milk chocolate and caramel in one delicious bar, with a pinch of salty flavour from the nearby salt works at Salins-les-Bains. Proof positive that chocolate is addictive at any age!
Artisan : Aux P’tits Bonheurs.
In the heart of Jura's untamed wilderness, these artisans concoct natural tisanes from wild plants gathered in the hills and other local plants they cultivate. We loved the variety of their recipes, but we were also impressed by their commitment to organic agriculture. You can't feel guilty about giving yourself a little treat when it's all-natural! To brew yourself a steaming cup, let the herbal blend steep in hot water for 4 to 10 minutes, depending on the desired intensity.
